After reading posts it sounds like a good idea to be ready to get into the grounds bright and early when the gates open. Is there a decent place to stay/camp in Detroit Lakes the night before? I notice rates at hotels are hiked up during that week for the fest. If not Detroit Lakes is there somewhere else close that's an easy early morning trip to 10KLF? Fargo? (I'm coming from Wisconsin so I'd rather not drive any further than I need to.) I'm kind of clueless about that area of the world (although I've been to Fargo once and had a great time...seriously).

I'm pretty sure we're going to Minneapolis early in the afternoon on Tuesday and hanging out at my sister's house until about midnight-1:30am.. then we're making the drive to wait in line so we'll be getting there between 4 and 5:30am.. Luckily I have somewhere to hang out. Otherwise we'd probably leave around 9 or 10 on Tuesday night because we're driving from Green Bay. If you want to stay in a campground the night before, there are a bunch around the Detroit Lakes area... Go here for a list of them (you can find a list of hotels and other stuff on this site too): www.visitdetroitlakes.com/chamber/businesses/lodging/campgrounds/

I agree - I was looking at hotel rates, and the best I found for Tuesday night was $75. And it sure looked seedy... And although campgrounds seem like a good idea, there's the take-down time in the morning as well. So I decided I'd rather have that money for music and alcohol, and will just head out of Duluth around midnight.
I don't like coffee or energy drinks. I'm hoping sheer excitement will keep me awake on the way there.

We always stay the night before at Maplewood State Park that is right by Pelican Rapids, not far at all and quite pleasant. They have showers too. I think it is about $18 per night for a campsite. They have a couple of newer camping cabins too that I think run about $40. It has never been crowded there either. www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/maplewood/index.htmlSince I camp in my van I don't have to worry about taking down a tent, but I can see where that could be an issue.

we have been in a debate about going earlier and staying at another campsite or hotel but since we want to get in line pretty early, I think we are just going to drive the 19 hours straight. We have done a similar drive several times and so we can just take turns sleeping on the road while the other drives.

We are leaving at about 2 or 3 am and I will probably go to bed about 5pm the night we leave. Car will mostly be packed so up, shower and go! We can drive a good 18 or 19 hours and be at a hotel at about 8 or 9 pm. We leave in 16 days ;D
