Hey guys, Has anyone ever gone kayaking in the San Juan Islands area? Mostly will be Seattle. I can go up about as far as Deception Pass and rent stuff there, but was more looking to go out somewhere off one of the islands. My sisters house is near the ferry in Mukilteo so I can walk on easily. Any help would be appreciated and as always....Thanks in advance!

Hah, I wish I could say I have done that.. or even been near there! I've only gone kayaking in Detroit Lakes and Minneapolis though... but wow that sounds like a good time. Share pictures if you can!

I'm not going until June but trying to find some good rental places and choose a paddling route. I don't even know if the Orcas are around at that time, I think are, but would love to see some of those!

Hey Sprunkn7! I was there last August for my cousin's wedding. Here's the link for the company I used: www.outdoorodysseys.com/ I was by myself so elected to go with a guide. Didn't want to get in trouble alone. But if you're looking to rent here's another company for you: www.sanjuankayak.com/rentals.html I spoke with the owner, he seems pretty cool & will chart your paddle for you. You may see some orcas, the season is from April - September I think, but they are unpredictable. I was lucky. We saw a pod of about 20 right in front of us. The most amazing thing I have experienced! They are quite beautiful creatures and it was really breathtaking. I felt quite small and so lucky to have experienced that. I hope you do too! Have fun!

Thanks for the info, I think Odyssey is the company I'm going to use. Everyone that has used them gives great reviews. I def want to go out from Roche Harbor, not Friday Harbor. Very promising that you saw whales. I know it's not a sure thing, but I have pretty good luck in the whale department! Looks like my nieces are going to join me so we are probably going to do a 3 or 5 hour tour w/ a guide. I wouldn't go it alone with two teenagers! Thanks again for helping me make up my mind!

As luck would have it, Orcas there the day before I went and the day after! Still a wonderful experience! Saw plenty of seals and eagles. An elephant seal was very friendly which I hear is not the norm with them. What I cared about the most was time with my sister and my nieces. The day was beautiful and we had a blast. www.outdoorodysseys.com/They were fantastic. Gave us a vegetarian lunch, Strawberry salad in pitas and carrots. Ginger cookies for desert. I would recommend it! Even without the whale sightings it was breathtaking.
